Most people know their zodiac sign — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio. But in Vedic Jyotish astrology, that sign can turn out to be completely different, and its meaning can be interpreted differently too. The zodiac is a belt of 12 signs that the Sun moves through over the course of a year. It’s the Sun’s sign that people usually call “their own” — but in a birth chart, it’s just one indicator among many.
Your Lagna is the sign rising on the horizon at the moment you were born. Astronomically, it’s the same point as the Ascendant in Western astrology, but in Jyotish, it’s the starting point for building every house in your chart — and it describes your personality, body, and character more precisely than your Sun sign does. Without knowing your Lagna, a forecast only works partway. Enter your date, time, and place of birth into the calculator below to find your Lagna.

What's the Difference Between Western and Vedic Astrology
About 2,000 years ago, the zodiac’s starting point was fixed to March 21 — the spring equinox. Western astrology has used that fixed calendar reference point ever since: the date arrives, so Aries has begun. But Earth’s axis slowly shifts — this is called precession. Over two thousand years, the real position of the stars in the sky has shifted by about 23-24 degrees, or almost a full sign.
It might seem like this is exactly what leap years are for — adding an extra day every four years so the calendar doesn’t drift from reality. That’s true: without a leap year, March 21 would gradually slide toward summer or winter. But that correction only exists to keep March 21 landing at the start of spring, year after year — it has nothing to do with the stars shifting relative to that date. Precession works on a 26,000-year scale, and no leap year compensates for it.
Western astrology doesn’t account for this difference — it’s still anchored to a calendar date set two thousand years ago. Vedic Jyotish astrology corrects for this shift (called the ayanamsa) and determines your sign based on the actual position of the stars at the moment you were born.
That’s why your Jyotish Lagna often differs from the zodiac sign you’re used to — usually by one sign back. It’s the result of a more precise calculation that accounts for the sky’s actual movement, not just a different take on the same thing.
Guide to the Zodiac Signs
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the position of the Moon (Chandra) in a zodiac sign shows the “lens” through which our mind (Manas) perceives the world, how we react to stress, and where we find emotional comfort.
Below is a guide to how the Moon influences each of the 12 signs.

1. Moon in Aries (Mesha)
A fiery, impulsive, leader’s mind.
Impact on the psyche: Reactions are quick, fiery, and direct. A person tends to catch fire with ideas instantly, but cool off just as fast. There’s a drive to compete, along with stubbornness and impatience — though little tendency to hold a grudge for long.
Recommended: Active sports, fast-paced and energetic tasks, making bold decisions, taking initiative, physical work.
Not recommended: Getting into drawn-out arguments, starting tasks that require patience and persistence, acting on a flash of anger.
2. Moon in Taurus (Vrishabha)
Exaltation of the Moon: a stable, sensual, harmonious mind.
Impact on the psyche: Deep emotional calm and resilience to stress. The mind seeks comfort, aesthetics, material security, and good food. Reactions are slow, but very deliberate.
Recommended: Financial deals, major purchases, creative pursuits, body care (massage, spa), romantic dates, working with soil and plants.
Not recommended: Sudden changes, rushing, fuss, giving in to stinginess and stubbornness.

A quick, curious, sociable mind.
Impact on the psyche: High mental activity, flexibility, and quick switching between tasks. The mind tends toward surface-level perception, information overload, and mild anxiety from an excess of thoughts.
Recommended: Learning, reading, negotiations, public speaking, meeting new people, short trips, working with text and social media.
Not recommended: Making life-changing decisions (the mind can “scatter”), focusing on one task for a long stretch without breaks.
4. Moon in Cancer (Karka)
Own sign: a deep, intuitive, nurturing mind.
Impact on the psyche: High sensitivity and empathy. Mood is strongly shaped by surroundings and the phases of the Moon. The mind seeks emotional security, and tends toward nostalgia and a strong attachment to home and family.
