How to use the lunar calendar

Do you know what connects the world’s largest financial hubs, the Bollywood industry, and India’s space program? All of them check the lunar calendar.

This isn’t a joke. The fourth-largest space agency in the world officially consults astrologers before launches. The biggest deals in Asia are closed only on auspicious days. And traders have long noticed that markets behave differently at the full moon and new moon. You can call that a coincidence. Or you can call it a system — used by those who don’t leave success to chance.

The Vedic lunar calendar is a tool of precise timing. It shows you when the energy favors action and when it’s better to pause. When to start something new and when to finish what’s old. When your decisions will meet support, and when they’ll meet resistance.

I use it every day. And I see the difference in the results of my clients who do the same.

Panchanga: the five pillars of Vedic time

The Vedic calendar isn’t just a record of the Moon’s phases. At its foundation is the panchanga (Sanskrit for “five limbs“) — a system formalized thousands of years ago by sages such as Varahamihira, calculated according to the canons of the Surya Siddhanta.

The panchanga describes the quality of every moment in time through five interconnected elements:

  • Tithi — the lunar day, the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon. Thirty tithis make up a lunar month, split into a waxing half (Shukla Paksha) and a waning half (Krishna Paksha). Ekadashi is one of the tithis — a day of fasting and spiritual practice.
  • Vara — the day of the week, each ruled by its own planet, which sets the overall tone of the day.
  • Nakshatra — the lunar mansion, the Moon’s position among 27 stellar sectors. This is the same layer you’ll see in the Moon-by-sign breakdown below.
  • Yoga — the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s positions, one of 27 combinations that determines the day’s energetic quality separately from the tithi.
  • Karana — half of a tithi, the finest level of timing, used to pinpoint the exact hour to begin something important.

In the Vedic tradition, each of the five elements of the panchanga corresponds to one of the five elements of creation: vara to Agni (fire), tithi to Jala (water), karana to earth, yoga to ether, and nakshatra to air. Only when all five elements align favorably is a moment considered truly right for an important step. That’s exactly why calculating a muhurta isn’t just “a good day on the calendar” — it’s a precise, multidimensional kind of timing.

The calendar you see below already accounts for these interactions — you don’t need to calculate tithi and karana by hand. But now you understand what’s behind the color of each cell.

How to use the calendar

The calendar is a visual map of the month.
Here’s how to read it.

Structure:

  • Rows on the left — Moon phases (full moon, waning, new moon, waxing)
  • Top bar — planetary retrogrades and key transits of the month
  • Cells — the day, the Moon’s sign, and the time it shifts into a new sign

What the cell colors mean:

🤍 Light background — an auspicious day, good for planning important matters
💜 Pink/lilac background — not ideal for starting something new, better to postpone
💛 Yellow background — Ekadashi: a day of fasting and spiritual practice
🖤 Black background — new moon or full moon
🩶 Grey background — a lunar or solar eclipse

The icons on the right are activity cues: home, health, finances, relationships, creativity, and more.

Times are given in the GMT+2 time zone (Kyiv, Athens).

Keep in mind: the effect of the full moon and new moon is felt 1–2 days before and after the exact date. Plan key decisions with that window in mind.

The Moon in the zodiac signs

The Moon moves through all 12 zodiac signs in roughly 27–28 days, spending about 2.5 days in each. But true Vedic astrology (Jyotish) looks deeper than a single sign: within each sign are nakshatras — 27 lunar mansions that subtly color the Moon’s energy. This is exactly why Indian astrologers have traditionally oriented themselves first by the Moon rather than the Sun — it governs the mind (manas), the emotions, and how you experience reality.

Each sign gives the Moon its own character, and the ruling planet of that sign determines how that energy gets used — actively or contemplatively, materially or spiritually. In two signs, the Moon shows up in a special way: in Taurus it is exalted, at its highest strength, while in Scorpio it is debilitated, its power weakened — though that very weakness opens the door to deep transformation.

Below is a detailed breakdown of the Moon’s energy in each sign: what to feel, what to expect from yourself and others, which matters to start, and which to hold off on. Use this section alongside the calendar above to understand the current lunar transit precisely and plan your day in step with the cosmic rhythm.

Did you know: a 7.5-year transit of Saturn through three signs around your natal Moon is called Sade Sati — one of the most significant periods in Vedic astrology. It doesn’t mean misfortune — it’s a period of maturing and deep inner work, best lived consciously.

Moon in Aries

Ruling planet: Mars · Element: Fire

Овен_лагна

When the Moon enters Aries, the mind shifts into pioneer mode. Mars, the sign’s ruler, pours speed and heat into the emotions — you want to act before you think, to start before everything is fully worked out. This is one of the most “alive” transits of the month: energy rises sharply, decisions get made fast, and patience for deliberation wears thin.

Body and psyche. Physically you’ll feel a surge of energy, and irritability or impatience may flare up — a normal reaction of the root chakra (Muladhara) to Mars’s heightened energy. A good practice is to channel that surplus into physical activity rather than conflict. This day’s inner affirmation: “I am brave and passionate, and my energy serves me.”

Work and finances: excellent for launching a new project, taking the first step in negotiations, or a bold initiative. Not the best time for financial planning years ahead — Aries thinks in the here and now.

Relationships: passion and honesty come to the fore, but so does the risk of saying something you’ll regret later. If you need a decisive conversation, now is the moment; if you need a diplomatic one, better to wait for a different transit.

Health: a good time to start a new physical practice, but the risk of injury from rushing and carelessness is higher — warming up is essential.

Nakshatras of Aries:

  • Ashwini (ruled by Ketu) — the energy of instant healing. The best time of the month to start anything related to health.
  • Bharani (ruled by Venus) — transformation through intensity. Good for finishing old business and making difficult decisions — but expect emotional intensity.
  • Krittika, beginning (ruled by the Sun) — a purifying fire. Suited to matters that call for directness and the courage to speak the truth.

Stone to strengthen this energy: red coral or garnet set in silver — Mars’s stones, traditionally used in the Vedic tradition to strengthen resolve and guard against impulsive mistakes.

Practice of the day: the Mangala mantra (“Om Angarakaya Namah”) or 10 minutes of active breathing (kapalabhati) — to channel Mars’s fire into the body rather than into words.

What to do: sports, launching projects, bold decisions.
What to avoid: impulsive purchases, conflict, hasty promises.

Moon in Taurus (exaltation)

Ruling planet: Venus · Element: Earth

Телец_лагна

Taurus is the house of the Moon’s greatest strength. Here the mind gains a steadiness it lacks in other signs, while Venus adds a pull toward beauty, comfort, and sensory pleasure. This is a transit when you want to slow down and enjoy good food and the beauty around you — and slowing down is exactly what works best here, better than rushing.

Body and psyche. Emotions are deep, stable, dependable. The heart chakra (Anahata) opens up to warmth and closeness. If you need to make a weighty decision or hold an important meeting in a comfortable setting, this is your window. Affirmation of the day: “I am abundant.”

Work and finances: one of the best transits of the month for financial decisions, pay negotiations, and investing in quality and durability.

Relationships: sensuality and tenderness come to the fore — a good moment for romantic gestures and time spent together relaxing.

Health: the body asks for care through pleasure — massage, good food, and time in nature restore you faster than any effort of will.

Nakshatras of Taurus:

  • Krittika, continued — the resolve to see things through to the end.
  • Rohini (ruled by the Moon) — the most creative and abundant nakshatra. Wonderful for art, romance, and financial agreements.
  • Mrigashira, beginning (ruled by Mars) — lightness and curiosity. Great for travel and new acquaintances.

Stone to strengthen this energy: rose quartz or white sapphire set in silver — Venus’s stones, which enhance harmony, attractiveness, and financial stability.

Practice of the day: the Shukra mantra (“Om Shukraya Namah”), or simply a mindful pause with something truly pleasurable for the body — unhurried.

What to do: financial decisions, caring for the body, creativity, time with loved ones.
What to avoid: rushing, abrupt changes, risky ventures.

Moon in Gemini

Ruling planet: Mercury · Element: Air

Близнецы_лагна

Gemini switches the mind into scanning mode. Mercury speeds up thinking, information is absorbed more easily, and you want to talk and exchange ideas. This is a transit of lightness and multiplicity — several topics, conversations, and tasks at once.

Body and psyche. Emotions are changeable — and that’s a normal part of the transit, not a reason for worry. The throat chakra (Vishuddha) is active: words come easily, sometimes faster than the mind can keep up. Affirmation of the day: “I know everything I need to know right now.”

Work and finances: a great time for negotiations, presentations, working with texts, and any kind of communication. Not the best time for decisions that require deep, sustained concentration.

Relationships: light, cheerful conversation, flirting, exchanging news. Serious, deep conversations are better postponed for another transit.

Health: the nervous system runs at a higher rev — if you feel scattered, that’s a signal to slow down, not to push even harder.

Nakshatras of Gemini:

  • Mrigashira, continued — lightness of perception, an exploratory mood.
  • Ardra (ruled by Rahu) — intensity and purification. Old emotions may surface — a good moment to work through them.
  • Punarvasu, beginning (ruled by Jupiter) — return and restoration, a fresh start.

Stone to strengthen this energy: emerald set in silver or gold — Mercury’s stone, traditionally used for clarity of mind and eloquence.

Practice of the day: the Buddha mantra (“Om Budhaya Namah”) or 5 minutes of journaling — offloading your thoughts onto paper instead of an endless inner dialogue.

What to do: negotiations, learning, networking, short trips, writing.
What to avoid: long-term commitments, information overload.

Moon in Cancer (own sign)

Ruling planet: the Moon · Element: Water

Рак_лагна

Cancer is the Moon’s home sign, where its influence is at its purest and strongest. Intuition sharpens, and the need for warmth and closeness grows. This is a time for care — of yourself, your family, your home.

Body and psyche. Emotions are deep and genuine — give them room, don’t suppress them. The third-eye area (Ajna) sharpens: intuitive hunches during this transit are often accurate. Affirmation of the day: “I am safe.”

Work and finances: a good time for matters related to home, real estate, and family business. Avoid cold business negotiations — right now you’re too sensitive for a hard-nosed position.

Relationships: one of the best transits of the month for family — heart-to-heart talks, reconciliations, and caring for loved ones all go especially warmly.

Health: the body literally asks for rest and nourishment — good food, sleep, and quiet time restore you faster than activity does.

Nakshatras of Cancer:

  • Punarvasu, continued — restoring connections, reconciliation.
  • Pushya (ruled by Saturn) — considered the most auspicious nakshatra for new beginnings: nourishment, care, spiritual growth.
  • Ashlesha (ruled by Mercury) — depth and hidden processes. A time for meditation.

Stone to strengthen this energy: pearl or moonstone set in silver — the Moon’s classic stones, which enhance emotional balance and intuition.

Practice of the day: the Chandra mantra (“Om Chandraya Namah”) or a warm bath with the intention of releasing the day’s accumulated tension.

What to do: family matters, self-care, intuitive decisions.
What to avoid: conflict (you’re too open right now), cold business dealings.

Moon in Leo

Ruling planet: the Sun · Element: Fire

Лев_лагна

Leo lights an inner sun in the mind. A desire to create, to express yourself, and to share your light with the world emerges. Emotions are bright, generous, sometimes dramatic — and that’s exactly what makes this transit feel so alive.

Body and psyche. The third-eye area is active alongside an overall sense of self-confidence. You want to be seen and appreciated — that’s a normal need, not vanity. Affirmation of the day: “I create.”

Work and finances: a wonderful time for presentations, public speaking, and anything that requires putting yourself forward. Negotiations about recognition for your contribution — a raise, a fee, credit for your work — tend to go well.

Relationships: generosity, romance, a wish to spoil and be spoiled. The risk is expecting constant admiration from your partner — worth watching the balance.

Health: the heart, literally and figuratively, is in focus — a good time for cardio and anything connected to the joy of movement.

Nakshatras of Leo:

  • Magha (ruled by Ketu) — connection to ancestors and lineage, authority. Good for important ceremonies.
  • Purva Phalguni (ruled by Venus) — pleasure, rest, romance. Ideal for celebrations and dates.
  • Uttara Phalguni, beginning (ruled by the Sun) — generosity and stable partnerships. Good for contracts and partnerships.

Stone to strengthen this energy: ruby set in gold — the Sun’s classic stone, which enhances leadership, vitality, and confidence.

Practice of the day: the Surya mantra (“Om Suryaya Namah”) or a short Sun Salutation practice (Surya Namaskar) at sunrise.

What to do: creativity, presentations, celebrations, time with children.
What to avoid: expecting constant admiration, ignoring others’ needs.

Moon in Virgo

Ruling planet: Mercury · Element: Earth

Дева_лагна

Virgo switches on the mind’s analytical mode. Attention to detail sharpens, and you want to bring order to your affairs, your space, your thoughts — a time for systematizing and precise work.

Body and psyche. The throat chakra is active alongside heightened self-demand. The one trap of this transit: rising criticism easily turns into self-criticism. Affirmation of the day: “I am enough.”

Work and finances: one of the best transits for working with documents, reporting, and detailed budget planning.

Relationships: usefulness and care are expressed through practical help rather than words — your partner may not appreciate this right away, so it’s worth saying it out loud.

Health: a good time for detox, a doctor’s visit, and starting healthy habits — the body readily responds to discipline right now.

Nakshatras of Virgo:

Uttara Phalguni, continued — organization, helping others, contracts.
Hasta (ruled by the Moon) — craftsmanship and handwork. Ideal for crafts and detailed work.
Chitra, beginning (ruled by Mars) — aesthetics and design. Good for creating something visually beautiful.

Stone to strengthen this energy: emerald or peridot set in silver — Mercury’s stones, which support clarity of mind and practicality.

Practice of the day: the Buddha mantra (“Om Budhaya Namah”) or 10 minutes of tidying one specific spot — a symbolic act for the mind.

What to do: planning, paperwork, detox, health.
What to avoid: perfectionism, excessive self-criticism, nitpicking at loved ones.

Moon in Libra

Ruling planet: Venus · Element: Air

Весы_лагна

Libra tunes the mind toward harmony. You’re drawn to balance in relationships, to beauty, and to pleasant conversation. This is a transit of diplomacy and aesthetics — sharpness feels especially out of place here.

Body and psyche. The heart chakra is open, but indecision is possible — that’s not weakness, it’s a search for balance that shouldn’t be rushed. Affirmation of the day: “I am beautiful.”

Work and finances: a great time for negotiations, partnership agreements, and any arrangement where balancing both sides’ interests matters.

Relationships: one of the best transits of the month for romance, reconciliation, and joint decisions about the future.

Health: the body craves aesthetic pleasure — a beautiful space, pleasant music, light physical activity in good company.

Nakshatras of Libra:

  • Chitra, continued — creativity, design, aesthetics.
  • Swati (ruled by Rahu) — independence and flexibility. Excellent for business and negotiations.
  • Vishakha, beginning (ruled by Jupiter) — determination. A time to set ambitious goals.

Stone to strengthen this energy: white sapphire or opal set in silver — Venus’s stones, which enhance harmony and diplomacy.

Practice of the day: the Shukra mantra (“Om Shukraya Namah”) or consciously creating beauty around you — even simply tidying your desk becomes a ritual.

What to do: negotiations, partnerships, art, dates.
What to avoid: decisions made under pressure, rudeness, confrontational conversations.

Moon in Scorpio (debilitation)

Ruling planet: Mars · Element: Water

Скорпион_лагна

Scorpio is a territory of depth, where the Moon feels uncomfortable — yet it’s exactly that discomfort that opens the door to transformation. Everything hidden rises to the surface. This is a time for honesty with yourself, not for ease.

Body and psyche. The solar plexus area (Manipura) is active — willpower sharpens, as does the ability to see true motives, both your own and others’. Affirmation of the day: “I am strong.”

Work and finances: a good time for investigations, audits, and working with other people’s money, resources, or inheritance — anywhere insight is required.

Relationships: intensity rises — this can mean either deep closeness or the flaring up of old conflicts. Choose honesty over avoidance.

Health: a good time for medical checkups and dealing with whatever you’ve long put off. Right now the body doesn’t forgive a superficial approach.

Nakshatras of Scorpio:

  • Vishakha, continued — overcoming obstacles, achieving difficult goals.
  • Anuradha (ruled by Saturn) — friendship, devotion, spiritual practice.
  • Jyeshtha (ruled by Mercury) — leadership and protection. A time to take responsibility.

Stone to strengthen this energy: red coral or garnet set in silver — Mars’s stones, which help channel this transit’s intensity into something constructive.

Practice of the day: the Mangala mantra (“Om Angarakaya Namah”) or a written “letting go” practice — write down what it’s time to release, then physically destroy the page.

What to do: deep conversations, psychological work, meditation.
What to avoid: jealousy, manipulation, suppressing emotions.

Moon in Sagittarius

Ruling planet: Jupiter · Element: Fire

Стрелец_лагна

Sagittarius throws open the mind’s horizons. A sense emerges that the world is full of possibility — you want to travel, learn, try something new. Jupiter, the sign’s ruler, adds optimism and faith in the best outcome.

Body and psyche. The sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) is active alongside an overall sense of lightness. The risk of this transit is overestimating your strength or making too many promises. Affirmation of the day: “I am free.”

Work and finances: an excellent time for expansion — new markets, partnerships with foreign companies, learning new skills.

Relationships: lightness, humor, philosophical conversations about meaning — a good time for an honest talk about the future of the relationship.

Health: a good time for a change of scenery, active rest, anything that expands your horizons — literally, not just the couch in front of a screen.

What to do: travel, learning, spiritual practice.
What to avoid: overpromising, overlooking details.

Moon in Capricorn

Ruling planet: Saturn · Element: Earth

Козерог_лагна

Capricorn switches on results mode. Focus shifts to goals, obligations, and concrete achievements; feelings take a back seat — and that’s fine. Saturn, the sign’s ruler, demands discipline but rewards patience generously.

Body and psyche. The root chakra is active alongside a sense of seriousness and responsibility. The risk of this transit is emotional coldness toward yourself. Affirmation of the day: “I am strong.”

Work and finances: one of the best transits of the month for career decisions, long-term planning, and negotiations about status and recognition.

Relationships: a partner may seem distant — likely it’s not about feelings, but about a focus on obligations. Better to say this directly than to assume.

Health: a good time for discipline — sleep schedules, regular workouts, anything that calls for consistency, not inspiration.

Nakshatras of Capricorn:

Stone to strengthen this energy: amethyst or blue sapphire set in silver — Saturn’s stones, which help you sustain discipline without burning out.

Practice of the day: the Shani mantra (“Om Shanaishcharaya Namah”) or drawing up an honest plan for the month ahead — Saturn values structure over emotion.

What to do: career decisions, long-term planning.
What to avoid: emotional coldness toward loved ones, workaholism.

Moon in Aquarius

Ruling planet: Saturn · Element: Air

Водолей_лагна

Aquarius lifts the mind above the everyday. An interest in the innovative and the future emerges; emotions are calm, a little detached — as if you were watching life from a bird’s-eye view.

Рыбы_лагна

Pisces closes the zodiac cycle. Here the Moon becomes maximally sensitive, dreamy, intuitive — the boundaries between you and others, between reality and imagination, blur.

Body and psyche. The sacral chakra is active alongside heightened empathy. The risk of this transit is dissolving into other people’s emotions and losing your boundaries. Affirmation of the day: “I am deeply connected to everything.”

Work and finances: not the best time for legal details and precise figures — but a wonderful one for creative ideas and intuitive insight about your direction.

Relationships: deep compassion and closeness, but also a risk of idealizing your partner — worth checking in with reality, not only with your feelings.

Health: a good time for rest, working with the subconscious, and practices near water. Avoid alcohol and anything that blurs boundaries even further.

Nakshatras of Pisces:

Stone to strengthen this energy: aquamarine or yellow sapphire — Jupiter’s stones, which support intuition and spiritual connection without losing yourself.

Personal calculation of auspicious dates

The lunar calendar is a powerful tool. But it works with general energies. Your life is unique.

People often come to me with a specific request: finding the best date for an important event. A wedding. Launching a business. Buying property. Moving. A surgical procedure.

This is called muhurta — the Vedic system for choosing an auspicious moment. It takes into account not just the Moon’s position, but your personal chart, current transits, and the specifics of the matter at hand.

By carrying out important actions at the right time, you get the support of cosmic energies instead of resistance. It’s not a guarantee of success, but it is a serious strategic advantage.

If you have a significant event coming up, I can calculate the best dates personally for your request.

The cost of preparing a personal annual horoscope (solar return) starts at €200.
