The Moon doesn’t just light up the night sky — it holds the entire planet’s climate together, and by all accounts, played a hand in life on Earth happening at all. Without it, Earth’s axis would “wobble” back and forth, and the climate would swing from one extreme to another — it’s the Moon’s gravity that keeps that axis stable, like an anchor. And the tides it creates likely helped the first living creatures crawl out of the water onto land, billions of years ago.
The Moon literally helped life on Earth happen — and it keeps holding it in balance. If it has this much influence on the oceans and the climate of an entire planet, it makes sense that its movement shows up in us too: in our mood, our energy, in what kind of day it is. The Moon moves across the sky and shifts into a new section every couple of days — and that determines how well-suited today is for important undertakings.
The Vedic Lunar Calendar helps you tune into this rhythm and check in with it day by day. And after all, living in step with nature’s rhythms means living in step with yourself.

Rahu Kalam and Abhijit — special hours of the day
Rahu Kalam is an inauspicious part of the day. It is best not to start anything important then — deals, trips, signings, new undertakings. What is already underway can safely continue; it is the start that should be moved.
Abhijit Muhurta is the most auspicious time of the day, the “victorious” muhurta around noon. Good for important undertakings, decisions and anything you want to give a strong start.
How it is calculated
We take the daylight time — from sunrise to sunset for your city — and divide it:
- into 8 equal parts for Rahu Kalam. Which part is “rahu” depends on the weekday: Monday — 2nd, Tuesday — 7th, Wednesday — 5th, Thursday — 6th, Friday — 4th, Saturday — 3rd, Sunday — 8th.
- into 15 equal parts (muhurtas) for Abhijit; the auspicious one is the middle, 8th — it falls on the solar noon.
That is why Rahu Kalam and Abhijit differ every day — they depend on the date and place.
A day in the Vedic calendar isn’t a smooth, even flow of time — it’s an alternation of strong and weak hours. Rahu Kalam and Abhijit Muhurta are the two most notable of these periods, and together they sketch the shape of the day: where it’s worth holding back, and where it’s worth acting boldly.
Abhijit translates as “unconquered,” and the name speaks for itself: things started during this muhurta are believed to gain a special power to see themselves through to completion. One curious detail: despite its general auspiciousness, Abhijit is traditionally not used for wedding ceremonies — different, more specific calculations apply there.
Rahu Kalam, in turn, is named after the shadow planet Rahu, which in the Vedic tradition is associated with illusion and distorted outcomes. That’s exactly why, during these hours, it’s customary to stick with what’s already underway and save new undertakings for another time.
The calculation above for your city and date takes into account the exact sunrise and sunset times — so the numbers will be more precise than any averaged table. Check the calendar before setting up an important meeting or deal, and the timing itself will point you toward the right part of the day.
Guide to the Nakshatras: What to Do on Each of the 27 Lunar Days
In Western astrology, the sky is divided into 12 zodiac signs. But Vedic Jyotish astrology has another, more precise division — into 27 small segments that the Moon passes through. Each of these segments is called a nakshatra.
The Moon passes through all 27 nakshatras in a single month, spending roughly a day in each one. The segment the Moon was in at the moment you were born is your personal nakshatra. It describes how you feel, how you react to stress, and what you actually need for inner peace more precisely than your zodiac sign does.
Each nakshatra has its own character, its own symbol, and its own energy — one is about care and nourishment, another about sharpness and directness, another about deep transformation. Knowing which nakshatra the Moon is in today makes it easier to understand the day itself: some days suit decisive action, others suit rest and quiet.
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Moon’s position in a specific nakshatra (lunar station) sets the subtle “mood” of the day, its energy, and which actions will bear fruit versus meet resistance. Below is a guide to all 27 nakshatras, with practical and spiritual recommendations.

Practical tip: For regular, positive undertakings, the most favorable nakshatras are the Dhruva group (fixed: Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada) and the Kshipra group (quick: Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta).
