Ekadashi is considered an auspicious day in Hindu and Jain culture. It occurs on the eleventh day of the two lunar cycles of the month, Krishna Paksha (the dark half of the lunar month) and Shukla Paksha (the bright half of the lunar month) . Spiritually, Ekadashi symbolizes the eleven senses, which are composed of the five senses, the five organs of action, and one Mind.
People fast to mark the day when we have the chance to control Destiny through the control of the eleven senses. On the physical plane, this is abstinence from food (full or partial), and on the subtle planes, this is an approach to the Higher Forces through the accumulation of energy and special rituals.

Ekadashi means the 11th day after the full moon and the 11th day after the new moon. Human physiology goes through a cycle called the mandala approximately every 40-48 days. In this cycle, when the body does not require food, three specific days occur, which may differ from person to person and do not have to be at the same interval. If you identify these days in your life and do not give food to the body – because it does not ask – many health problems will be solved with this simple scheme.
How to fast on Ekadashi?
The Puranas describe three main ways to fast on Ekadashi:
Nirjala: this means fasting absolutely without food on this day (purifies the energy and body, enhances spiritual progress);
Sajala: using this method you can drink water, fruit juices and other liquids throughout the day (purifies the body, speeds up recovery);
Farali: good for beginners, only milk and fruits can be consumed (calms emotions and removes toxins).
How to fast on Ekadashi?
To get the most correct effect from fasting on this day, you must follow the instructions:
- evening before Ekadashi last meal before sunset (preferably a light dinner)
- on the day of Ekadashi refrain from eating (choose the option available to you above ☝ ☝)
- throughout the day, refrain from unnecessary emotions, disputes, rude speech

What are the Ekadasi?
There are 24 types of Ekadashi in a year, and all of them are associated with various incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Each of them during fasting accompanies certain dietary rules that must be followed in order to direct mental energy in the right direction and refrain from bad deeds.
One of the most powerful. On this day, devotees observe a fast in the name of Lord Vishnu. Fasting begins at dawn on Ekadashi and continues until sunrise the next day, i.e. “Dvadashi”. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu by offering incense sticks, flowers, tulasi leaves, haldi, chandan, kumkuma, coconut with its husks, bananas, paan and supari to the deity. On this Ekadashi one fasts to destroy all the sins of the past and present life and live happily in the next life. The puja ends with the recitation of the Katha Gate and the singing of Aarti.
Putrada Ekadashi falls on January, on the eleventh day of the bright half of the lunar cycle. This translates to “giving sons” and fasting the day combined with performing puja to Lord Vishnu can bless the believer with children. Devotees begin fasting at dawn on Ekadashi and end the next morning. They should not eat rice, legumes, garlic and onions while fasting. People who do not observe the strict rules of fasting can eat milk and fruits. On this day, non-vegetarian foods are strictly prohibited in Hindu families.
Satilla or Tilda Ekadashi comes from the word “til” which means sesame seeds. On this Ekadashi, sesame seeds are brought and received, and food is prepared that includes them. People who fast on this day should donate sesame seeds, cereals and other foods to strengthen their fortunes. The history of this day highlights the importance of annadaana or food donation in Hindu culture. Devotees should not eat legumes, cereals, or beans at meal times, and fruits such as coconut, guava, and gourd should be offered to the deity.
On this auspicious day, people fast from the time of Jaya Ekadashi until the next morning. Adhering to the basic rule, non-vegetarian food is prohibited. Fasting people should not eat beans and rice, but eating on this day is not completely prohibited. They can eat quick recipes like aloo jira, sabudana kichdi, sabudana kheer, kattu ki souri or paratha, etc. Milk and fruits are also allowed. Honey, leafy vegetables and some spices are not considered auspicious.
Traditionally, Vijaya Ekadashi observes a full day fast, and it is obligatory to spend this day worshiping Lord Vishnu, who maintains the Earth. It is not advisable to eat tamasic foods made from onions and garlic. It is also not allowed to eat grains such as rice, lentils and legumes. Sabudana khichdi with ground nuts and potatoes is the preferred food during Vijaya Ekadashi. However, it should be seasoned only with rock salt and not add a lot of spices. You can also use milk and dried fruits.
Amalaki Ekadashi also glorifies the greatness of Lord Vishnu. It means Amla, which occupies a very important place in both Ayurveda and Hinduism. According to the Padma Purana, Amla was very dear to Lord Vishnu and the day is celebrated by making amla paste, worshiping the amla tree, consuming and even donating amla. It is also offered to the Lord as prasadam. During fasting, you can not eat grains and legumes, only potatoes, nuts, milk, fruits, black pepper and rock salt are allowed.
According to the Hindu calendar, Papmochani Ekadashi is celebrated in the month of Chaitra. Devotees of Lord Vishnu get up early and fast throughout the day. Special delicacies such as Kheer, Til Laddu and Mewa are prepared and offered to the Lord as prasadam. If they cannot keep a full fast, they can eat milk, fruit, falahari kichdi, and juice. Boiled or even raw vegetables are prohibited. On this day people donate food and clothes to the poor.
Kamada Ekadashi falls at the beginning of the “Hindi New Year” and fasting on this day is believed to protect devotees from many kinds of curses. During Ekadasi prayer, special bhog should be offered to Lord Vishnu and devotees should not eat on this day. If they are to eat, the food must be completely sattvic. Dry fruits, fruits and dairy products are allowed. Fasting should end the day after offering food to those in need. It is forbidden to eat beans, peas, legumes and grains. It is said that on this day one should not pluck and consume tulsi leaves.
It is believed that fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi is equivalent to austerity for ten thousand years. Fasting begins at the dawn of Ekadashi and continues until the morning of the next day. After performing puja and prashad and offering food to the brahmins, They can break the fast. If they cannot fully fast, they can eat once a day, but avoid red lentils, black gram, chickpeas, honey, betel nut leaves, betel nuts, or spinach. They can eat shabudana, milk, water, fruits and sweets.
On this day, a devotee must observe a strict fast to please Lord Vishnu. They may eat one meal after dinner if they cannot live without food all day and night. Then they must stay awake all night singing hymns. The fast can only be broken the next morning by eating fruits and milk. It is forbidden to eat food containing any grains or tamasic ingredients such as onion or garlic.
When worshiping the Lord on Apara Ekadashi, it is important to offer bhog and tulsi leaves. In addition, they must donate food and clothing to those in need. Share prasadam with all family members. On this day, foods such as rice, meat, onions, garlic, lentils are strictly prohibited. The next day, fasting should be broken only during Puran Muhurta. They can only eat dairy products, dry fruits, fruits and vegetables (if they cannot keep a full fast).
Nirjala is translated as “without water”. Fasting on this Ekadashi is observed for 24 hours without drinking, starting from sunrise on Ekadashi until the next morning. One evening before this Ekadashi, fasting people offer a prayer and then eat only once a day. The dish does not contain rice and lentils, as they are prohibited. They are allowed to drink a small drop of water after the cleansing ritual. During deity worship, panchamrit or a mixture of milk, ghee, curd, sugar and honey is offered.
Yogini Ekadashi involves eating food that does not contain salt. A devotee should not eat any stimulating food the night before Ekadashi and he is advised to eat without salty food. Barley, lunar dal and wheat are forbidden to eat on the eve, as well as on the day of fasting. A devotee may break his fast only after he has donated food and clothing to the brahmins and the needy the next morning.
On this pious day, devotees fast on Ekadashi, and the consumption of grams and lentils, honey, certain spices and any meat is strictly prohibited. They are also not allowed to eat tamasic food prepared from roots such as garlic and onions. They may break the fast the next morning by offering milk, honey, sugar and flour. This day marks the beginning of the Chaturmas, which are the sacred four months in the Hindu calendar and no auspicious work is done during this time.
This Ekadashi is celebrated during the Chaturma period, when Lord Vishnu is believed to be sleeping. On this day, devotees should offer milk, fruits and sesame seeds to the Lord in addition to flowers during worship. They should also offer panchamrit. It is considered best practice to fast all day and only eat after food is distributed to the poor the next morning. If they eat once, they should exclude rice and meat. Giving fresh buds of the Tulsi plant also has a special meaning on this day.
Fasting on Aja Ekadashi destroys our sins and ignorance. It is important to worship the Lord with grains and leaves or coriander seeds. Eating grams, seeds, honey, or vegetables such as caronda (karunda) is prohibited. They should only eat one meal and not eat a second meal that day. Masoor dal should not be eaten the night before the fast. Also, devotees should refrain from eating betel leaves (paan) in Dashami.
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi, also known as Pavitropana Ekadashi, occurs on the 11th lunar day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Shravana, which falls in July or August in the Gregorian calendar.
On this day, fasting devotees donate money, food, clothes to temples to conceive a son. The son is considered to be of exceptional importance in society as he takes care of the parents in their advanced age during life. A practitioner of shraddha (ancestral rites) ensures the well-being of his parents in the afterlife. Although each Ekadashi has a separate name and is intended for a specific purpose, the purpose of having sons is so great that the two Ekadashis of Pavitropan and Putrada (“giving sons”) are dedicated to it. Other targets do not enjoy this privilege.
On Parshva Ekadashi, fasting and praying to Lord Vishnu cleanse the devotees of all sins and please Goddess Lakshmi. If they want to fast on this day, they should not eat after sunset on Dashami. They should worship the Lord with sesame seeds, seasonal fruits and tulasi leaves. On this day, they should not eat regularly, but they can eat fruits, dairy products and dried fruits after the evening prayer. On this day, they should avoid eating rice, grains and beans.
On Indira Ekadashi, fasting is observed to save the ancestors. On this day, Lord Shaligram is worshipped. Devotees should not eat more than once from the evening before Ekadashi. They can only break the Dashami fast after the tarpan ceremony and after food has been offered to the brahmins. On Ekadasi, they should fast all day without grains and grains, then donate food to the brahmins, and then to the crow, cow, and dog. The fast is broken only on Dvadasi after performing the puja and eating together with the family.
Fasting is an integral part of Padmini Ekadashi and purifies the mind, soul and body. The observer cannot eat foods such as rice, chickpeas, spinach, honey, and urad dal. Devotees who cannot keep a strict fast may eat fruits and dairy products. Fasting begins with Dasami and the devotee should eat light food without onions, garlic and strong spices. Eating in bronze utensils is prohibited.
Fasting on this Ekadasi frees the devotees from all sins and they attain the realm of the gods. On this day, only sattvic foods consisting of fruits, sweets and dairy products are allowed. This option is for those who cannot live a whole day without food. Devotees keep a 24-hour fast and survive on water alone. They should not eat foods such as lentils, grams, honey, meat and vegetables.
On Papankusha Ekadashi, devotees should start fasting from the day of Dashami, just like other Ekadashis. They should not consume rice, barley, wheat, gram, mung and urad dal on Dashami as these seven grains are considered pious and honored on this day. Foods with heavy digestion such as sabudana, chips, bananas or fried foods are prohibited. Drinks such as water, fruit juice and milk are allowed. The fast can only be broken on Dvadasi after serving food to the Brahmins.
People who cannot fast on Rama Ekadashi should avoid eating rice or any non-vegetarian foods. Those who are fasting should generally abstain from food on this day. However, if this is not possible, they can only eat vegetarian and organic foods. Devotees should apply turmeric to basil leaves and offer to the Lord during the puja.
It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu wakes up after a four-month rest. Starting from this Ekadashi, the devotees may continue their auspicious activities, which are prohibited during this period. Food is consumed at noon by Dasami and then devotees can only eat the next morning after Ekadashi. This is important so that even food residues do not remain in the body on a fasting day. Some people don’t eat or drink water at all, but others follow a more moderate fast by eating fruits, milk, natural fruit juices, and tea. Fasting people should not eat cereals, vegetables and cereals on this day.
According to religious beliefs, people who fast on Utapanna Ekadashi find all sorts of solace and after death they receive the shelter of Lord Vishnu. Devotees who have strength of body and willpower should observe a strict fast, drinking only water during the day. Those who cannot fast should not eat forbidden foods such as garlic, alcohol, meat, mazur dal, etc. Special importance is attached to inviting married women and offering them fruits. Kheer with tulsi leaves is also prepared on this day.
Like other Ekadashi, Mokshada Ekadashi is also marked by fasting from the break of the day until the next morning. A strict fast is observed, nothing can be eaten. Other people observe a partial fast when they consume fruit juices, dry fruits, milk, and fruits. Those who cannot fast but want to honor the Lord abstain from onions, garlic, legumes, beans, rice, etc. and stick to fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and nuts. On this day, the leaves of the Bel tree are eaten.
Why is rice not eaten on Ekadashi?
According to religious beliefs, a drop of sweat fell to the ground from Lord Brahma’s head and turned into a demon. When he asked for a place to live, Brahma told the demon to exist in the grains of rice consumed by people on Ekadashi and turn into worms in their stomach. There is also a scientific reason for the lack of rice on Ekadashi. Eating too much water on Ekadashi can cause imbalance, as the moon attracts water and the rays of the moon on this day have more cosmic energy. Since rice grains contain a lot of water, consumption of rice may lead to the worsening of certain conditions such as water retention, colds, sinusitis, etc.
